Dunkin’, Costco and Chobani Are Being Sued Over Allulose. Here’s What It Does in Your Gut.
On July 27 a federal appeals court held that allulose, the sweetener behind the “zero sugar” labels on Dunkin’ Zero, Chobani, KIND and Liquid Death, is a sugar under the FDA’s own rule. Nearly 60 lawsuits have followed, Costco’s Kirkland hydration mix among the latest. We read the complaints, the labels, the FDA’s paperwork and the human trials: about 70 percent of allulose passes through unburned, and the one dose-escalation study put the gut’s single-sitting line at 0.4 g per kilogram.
