Jeremy Allen White Shot the Calvin Klein Ad Three Days After a Stomach Bug. Here’s What Day Three Actually Looks Like

On Friday’s Drew Barrymore Show, Jeremy Allen White said he had a stomach bug three days before the Calvin Klein shoot, drank a lot of water, showed up, and ate Chinatown afterward. We put that on the CDC’s timeline: most people are better in one to three days, the gut lining renews every four to five days, and a person can still spread norovirus for two weeks or more after feeling better.

Jeremy Allen White Shot the Calvin Klein Ad Three Days After a Stomach Bug. Here’s What Day Three Actually Looks Like
The short answer

Jeremy Allen White said on the October 9, 2026 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show that he had a stomach bug about three days before his Calvin Klein underwear shoot, drank a lot of water, showed up, and ate a lot of Chinese food afterward because the shoot was in Chinatown. He did not say what the bug was. For norovirus, the leading cause of vomiting and diarrhea in the United States and the illness most people mean by "stomach bug," the CDC says symptoms start 12 to 48 hours after exposure, most people are better within 1 to 3 days, and a person can still spread the virus for 2 weeks or more after feeling better. The CDC and the WHO both say to replace fluids and electrolytes; oral rehydration fluids (water, salt and sugar) are the most helpful for mild dehydration.

Drew Barrymore had a clip ready. On Friday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, with Jeremy Allen White and Mikey Madison on her couch to talk about The Social Reckoning, she said “speaking of couches” and rolled tape from January 2024: Barrymore and Chrissy Teigen posing on the actual corduroy couch from his first Calvin Klein campaign, cardboard cutout of him included, “the most coveted couch on planet Earth right now.” Then the question. When you show up to that shoot, what is the prep? “I had a stomach bug,” White said. “How convenient,” Barrymore said. “Like three days before,” he went on. “I just drank a lot of water and then I showed up. That’s the truth. And then I ate so much Chinese food when I was done, because we were shooting it in Chinatown here.” We watched the clip twice, then opened the CDC’s norovirus pages, the WHO’s rehydration guidance and a physiology review, because “three days after a stomach bug” is a specific place on a timeline nobody printed.

Google already finishes the sentence: how long does a stomach bug last, how long are you contagious after a stomach bug, what to drink after stomach bug, stomach bug recovery timeline. The anecdote was everywhere by dinner. The answers were not. Here they are, from the primary pages, dated.

The moment: A film, a campaign and a replayed couch

The setting first. White and Madison were on the show together because The Social Reckoning, Aaron Sorkin’s companion piece to The Social Network, opens this weekend. Sony’s page dates it October 9, and Variety’s preview on Wednesday projected a $7 million to $8 million opening in North America, with Madison as a Facebook engineer who leaks internal documents to a Wall Street Journal reporter played by White. The couch is older. Calvin Klein launched its Spring 2024 campaign with White on January 4, 2024, shot by Mert Alas in New York, the brand’s parent company PVH said at the time. By the end of that month the couch from the shoot had been bought on Facebook Marketplace by a viewer who lent it to Barrymore’s set, Marie Claire reported, which is the segment she replayed on Friday. Nobody mentioned a stomach bug in 2024. It took two and a half years and a daytime talk show for that detail to surface; People had it up within hours.

The moment
The Drew Barrymore Show, October 9, 2026. The January 2024 couch clip at 1:10; the stomach bug at 2:12.

Day three: Where “three days after” sits on the CDC timeline

White did not say what he had, and we will not guess. What we can say is which timeline most people mean. Norovirus, in the CDC’s own words, “is sometimes called the ‘stomach flu’ or the ‘stomach bug,’” is not related to the flu, and is the leading cause of vomiting and diarrhea in the United States. Its About Norovirus page, dated April 24, 2024 and read October 9: symptoms usually start 12 to 48 hours after exposure; the most common are diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and stomach pain; and “most people with norovirus illness get better within 1 to 3 days.” Three days after it started, then, is the back edge of a typical bout: the day most people feel more or less themselves and decide whether to go to work. It is also, as the next two sections show, the day the gut is still mid-repair and the person is still contagious.

The water: Why “I just drank a lot of water” is the right instinct, with one footnote

Start with what a stomach bug takes. The WHO’s diarrhoeal disease fact sheet, updated March 2024, puts it in one sentence: water and electrolytes, which it lists as sodium, chloride, potassium and bicarbonate, are lost through liquid stools, vomit, sweat, urine and breathing, and dehydration is what happens when those losses are not replaced. Drinking a lot of water covers the first half of that sentence. The CDC’s norovirus page says to drink plenty of liquids to replace what vomiting and diarrhea took, with a footnote: sports drinks and other drinks without caffeine or alcohol can help with mild dehydration but “may not replace important nutrients and minerals,” and over-the-counter oral rehydration fluids “are most helpful for mild dehydration.” The WHO’s version of the same product is oral rehydration solution, “a mixture of clean water, salt and sugar,” which it says is absorbed in the small intestine and replaces the water and electrolytes that left. So the instinct was right; the upgrade both agencies describe is water with salt and sugar in it, which is what the pharmacy sachet is. Our diarrhea explainer has the longer version.

The Chinese food: What the gut lining is doing by day three

“You deserve all of that MSG after that shoot,” Barrymore told him, and the appetite is the least surprising part of the story. The lining of the intestine is the fastest-renewing tissue in the adult body. A 2009 review in the Annual Review of Physiology by L. G. van der Flier and Hans Clevers of the Hubrecht Institute opens on the figure: the gut is covered by a single layer of epithelial cells “that is renewed every 4-5 days,” built from stem cells at the bottom of the crypts and shed from the tips of the villi. Our reading of that number, and it is ours, not the review’s: by day three after a bug, a large share of the cells that lined the gut during the illness have already been replaced by cells that were not there for it. The review describes normal turnover, not recovery from an infection. The hunger after a few days of eating little is the body’s own suggestion; our Yom Kippur piece covers what a large meal does to an empty gut, and Chinatown after a shoot is the same event with better dumplings.

Day three after a stomach bug is the day most people feel fine, and the day the CDC says they can still pass it on.

The two weeks: The part of the timeline that is about everyone else

Here is the stake that is not about the person who was sick. The CDC’s How Norovirus Spreads page says a person is most contagious while they have symptoms, especially vomiting, and “during the first few days after you feel better,” then adds: “studies have shown that you can still spread norovirus for 2 weeks or more after you feel better.” Its prevention page, updated January 13, 2025, says the virus can be found in vomit or stool even before a person feels sick and “can also stay in your poop for 2 weeks or more after you feel better.” An infected person sheds billions of particles; it takes only a few to make the next person sick. Hand sanitizer, the CDC notes, does not work well against norovirus; soap and water for 20 seconds does. Its advice to anyone who has been sick is to wait at least 48 hours after symptoms stop before preparing food or caring for others. Day three after onset sits inside that two-week window, which is the thing to know for the crew, the roommates and the dumpling restaurant. The CDC says outbreaks are most common from November to April; our norovirus tracker reads the wastewater every week.

Facts to carry: norovirus symptoms start 12 to 48 hours after exposure and most people are better within one to three days; the CDC and the WHO both describe replacing water and electrolytes, with oral rehydration fluids (water, salt and sugar) named as most helpful for mild dehydration; the intestinal lining renews every four to five days; and a person can still spread norovirus for two weeks or more after feeling better, so the CDC’s 48-hour rule for handling food applies after the bug, not during it. White did not name what he had, and nothing here is about his health; it is about the timeline anyone lands on who says the same sentence. Calvin Klein, its parent company PVH, The Drew Barrymore Show, Sony Pictures, People and Variety had no involvement in this article. It is educational, describes what the cited CDC and WHO pages and the cited review say, and is not medical advice.

Frequently Asked

Answer-engine ready
What did Jeremy Allen White say about the Calvin Klein shoot on The Drew Barrymore Show?
On the October 9, 2026 episode, Drew Barrymore replayed her January 2024 clip of the actual couch from his first Calvin Klein campaign and asked what the prep for the shoot was. He said, "I had a stomach bug," Barrymore said, "How convenient," and he added, "Like three days before. I just drank a lot of water and then I showed up. That's the truth." He said he then ate a lot of Chinese food because the shoot was in Chinatown in New York. He did not say what kind of stomach bug it was.
How long does a stomach bug last?
The CDC says norovirus, the leading cause of vomiting and diarrhea in the United States, is what people often call the stomach flu or the stomach bug, although it is not related to influenza. On its About Norovirus page, read October 9, 2026, the CDC says symptoms usually begin 12 to 48 hours after exposure, the most common are diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and stomach pain, and most people get better within 1 to 3 days. Other viruses and bacteria can cause similar illness, and only a test can say which one a person had.
How long are you contagious after a stomach bug?
For norovirus, longer than most people assume. The CDC says a person is most contagious while they have symptoms and during the first few days after feeling better, but that studies have shown people can still spread norovirus for 2 weeks or more after they feel better. The virus can be found in stool before symptoms start and for 2 weeks or more afterward. The CDC advises waiting at least 48 hours after symptoms stop before preparing food or caring for others, and notes that hand sanitizer does not work well against norovirus; soap and water for 20 seconds is the recommended wash.
What should you drink after a stomach bug?
The CDC's norovirus page says to drink plenty of liquids to replace fluid lost through vomiting and diarrhea. It adds that sports drinks and other drinks without caffeine or alcohol can help with mild dehydration but may not replace important nutrients and minerals, and that over-the-counter oral rehydration fluids are most helpful for mild dehydration. The WHO describes oral rehydration solution as a mixture of clean water, salt and sugar that replaces the water and electrolytes (sodium, chloride, potassium and bicarbonate) lost in diarrhea. Plain water is a good start; the agencies' upgrade is water with salt and sugar in it. This is educational, not medical advice.
When did Jeremy Allen White's Calvin Klein campaign come out?
Calvin Klein launched its Spring 2024 campaign with Jeremy Allen White on January 4, 2024, according to a release from the brand's parent company, PVH. It was his debut for the brand, shot by Mert Alas in New York City, with the campaign appearing on Calvin Klein's social channels and on out-of-home placements. The corduroy couch from the shoot was later sold on Facebook Marketplace and lent to The Drew Barrymore Show in January 2024, the clip Barrymore replayed on October 9, 2026. He returned for a second campaign in fall 2024.
Is The Social Reckoning out?
Yes. The Social Reckoning, written and directed by Aaron Sorkin as a companion piece to The Social Network, opens in theaters on October 9, 2026, according to Sony Pictures' page for the film. Mikey Madison plays a Facebook engineer who leaks internal documents to a Wall Street Journal reporter played by Jeremy Allen White. Variety's October 7 preview projected an opening weekend of $7 million to $8 million in North America and reported a production budget of about $30 million.
